Nutrient Density: The Consumer Case for Regenerative Agriculture
Recent data from SPINS shows that 66% of consumers are purchasing with health in mind. Meanwhile, research has been building in recent years to show a clear correlation between soil health and nutrient dense outcomes, with brands like Patagonia Provisions, King Arthur Baking, Campbell’s, and Nestle announcing their own research into the link between soil health, regenerative practices and nutritional outcomes.
More than two dozen of the top food companies in the world have stated that they have some initiative around regenerative agriculture, but the focus is currently on soil, farmers, carbon and climate impacts, rather than engaging the consumer on personal outcomes. We believe that the Natural/Organic/Regenerative communities, and especially consumers, would be best served in understanding that their purchase intent around health can be met by companies who are measuring the impact of regenerative agriculture on nutrient density. Developing this awareness in the marketplace can create supply and demand that is based on meaningful outcomes as it relates to human health and which shores up demand for products that impact ecosystem health, biodiversity, carbon sequestration and more.
Speakers: Moderator, Megan Westgate, Executive Director Non-GMO Project; Gina Asoudegan, Vice President of Mission and Regenerative Agriculture at Applegate; Paul Lightfood, General Manager at Patagonia Provisions; and Brandon Casteel, VP Partnerships at SPINS.
