The Non-GMO Project is excited to welcome Lindsey Rieck to the Marketing and Outreach team as their Digital Media Assistant!
Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Lindsey developed a love for the environment at a young age from going on long hikes with her family. After graduating from Western Washington University with a BA in Environmental Studies and a minor in communications, Lindsey spent a year as an AmeriCorps Food Educator at Common Threads Farm. As a Food Educator, she developed a deep love for organic gardening and environmental education. Lindsey enjoys watching nature and cooking documentaries, painting with acrylics, and patio gardening.
What interests you about working with the Non-GMO Project- what about this opportunity caught your attention?
During my studies at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, I learned the reasons behind why GMOs posed such a major threat to our food supply. Becoming inspired, I then chose to focus my studies on sustainable food systems and how to effectively communicate about them in ways anyone could understand. The Non-GMO Project captures my personal values through their mission of providing verified non-GMO choices while also educating consumers on the effects of GMOs. As a Digital Media Assistant, I saw a great opportunity to help further their mission and work for an organization that I wholeheartedly support.
How do you think your prior experience will help you in working with the Non-GMO project?
When serving as an AmeriCorps Food Educator at the Bellingham based Nonprofit, Common Threads Farm, I provided farm to table education to elementary students and families through teaching garden and cooking classes. I also promoted their good food mission through social media, blog writing, and community outreach. I look forward to utilizing these skills in my role as Digital Media Assistant at the Non-GMO Project to continue public education on environmentally related issues.
What is important to you about the work you will be doing with the Project?
The Non-GMO Project allows you to vote with your dollars by purchasing Non-GMO Verified products which is essential when the goal is to create a Non-GMO food supply. As a member of the Marketing and Communications team, I will play a big role in keeping our website up to date, which is important for retailers and consumers in making sure they have the most current information for all their needs.
