Pet Food producer The Honest Kitchen today announced that it has completed the verification process with the Non-GMO Project, for its top selling Beams™ and Wishes™ treats for dogs and cats. The company has also begun the verification process for several other items in its line. The Non-GMO Project Seal will appear on the products’ packaging in the coming month.

“We, like many of our customers, are deeply concerned about the presence of GMOs in the food supply,” commented Lucy Postins, The Honest Kitchen’s founder and CEO. “We source all our ingredients from the human food chain and obtain a written promise from each supplier that what we’re buying has not been genetically modified. Being Non-GMO Project Verified is an additional layer of assurance on our commitment to this important issue. Customers deserve to know what is (and is not) in their pets’ food and treats.”

GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses, and other animals and plants. These experimental combinations of genes cross the natural species barrier and have not been proven safe.

“Our Verified products are produced in compliance with the Non-GMO Project Standard, which means we must follow rigorous best practices for GMO avoidance, including segregation and traceability to prevent contamination,” explained Laurette Sipe, The Honest Kitchen’s Director of Provenance and Procurement. “It’s exciting for us to be able to continue to raise the bar in our industry and help bring awareness to this important issue.”

Many of the ingredients most commonly used in pet foods and treats – such as corn, soy, beets and alfalfa – are at risk of genetic modification. The Non-GMO Project Standard requires testing of each individual major high-risk ingredient in a finished product. The Honest Kitchen is among the first companies in the nation to obtain verification for pet products. Additional Non-GMO Project Verifications for the company’s products will be announced as they complete the process.
