As the pioneer and established market leader for GMO avoidance, the Non-GMO Project has set the industry standard for non-GMO verification since the Butterfly first appeared on store shelves in 2010.
The Non-GMO Project Verified seal gives shoppers the assurance that a product has completed a comprehensive, third-party verification for compliance with the Non-GMO Project Standard.
Whether you want to demonstrate your brand’s commitment to transparency, provide consumers a choice in the marketplace, or take advantage of the growing non-GMO market, there are a host of reasons you should consider getting your products Non-GMO Project Verified!
True Third-Party Verification
The Non-GMO Project offers true third-party certification and is the only label backed by international principles for credible standard setting (including regular public comment periods to inform the Standard). The combination of our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and our commitment to transparency and integrity has earned us unique trust from consumers.
Consumers Demand GMO Transparency
Studies by leading industry research groups consistently show that consumers not only want to avoid GMOs in their food, but also actively seek out non-GMO claims on pack.
- 1 in 5 consumers surveyed actively consider the Non-GMO Project Butterfly mark to avoid consumption of GMOs ( Hartman Group, 2016)
- 50% of people surveyed in North America try to avoid GMOs in the food they are consuming (Nielsen, 2016)
- 72% say that it is important to avoid GMOs when shopping, and 40% are looking for non-GMO claims on food (Consumer Reports, 2014)
- Key reasons half or more of natural shoppers say they buy non-GMO: concerns about safety, increased availability where they shop, becoming more aware of the non-GMO issue (Market LOHAS, 2015)
- 34% of Baby Boomers and 29% of Millennials surveyed actively avoid genetically modified foods in their diet (Mintel, February 2017)
- 92% of American consumers think GMO food should be labeled (Consumer Reports, 2014)
- 88% of Canadians support mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods (CBAN, 2015)
Retailers Are Aligned with Our Mission
Retailers support our mission and want more Non-GMO Project Verified products! Leading natural and conventional retailers like Whole Foods, Costco, CVS, and Safeway are promoting Non-GMO Project Verified products.
The Non-GMO Project Retailer Program has over 14,000 registered retailers that actively promote Verified products. Every October, the Project holds its annual Non-GMO Month where participating retailers educate the public on the GMO issue and highlight Non-GMO Project Verified choices on store shelves. During Non-GMO Month October 2016, stores saw a 17% increase in sales of Non-GMO Project Verified products and an average lift of 15% from October 1 through December 25.
The Non-GMO Marketplace is Growing
Non-GMO Project Verified product sales have soared since 2011, and now represent over $26 billion in annual sales according to SPINS data from 2017. The global non-GMO foods market is expected to grow 16.23% between 2017-2021 (Global Non-GMO Foods Market New Research Report, 2017). Now in our 8th year of verifying products to the most rigorous standard for GMO avoidance in North America, we have over 50,000 products that bear the Butterfly across over 3,000 brands and this number continues to grow.
