Requirements & Process
The Non-GMO Project’s Product Verification Program (PVP) is a process-based program designed to assess compliance with the Non-GMO Project Standard. The core requirements are traceability, segregation, and testing at critical control points.
Compliance is assessed through a two part process. First, participants complete an online survey and upload information to a secure database for a document-based review. Based on this information, FoodChain Global Advisors (the Project’s technical consultants) works with participants to identify any adjustments that are needed for a given product to achieve “verified” status.
The second component is an on-site evaluation, which for certified organic products can be scheduled to coincide with the organic inspection; training of organic inspectors began in April 2008, as part of the International Organic Inspector’s Association’s advanced training.
How to begin the enrollment process
Growers, processors, distributors and manufacturers who are interested in having products verified, should begin by filling out a participation form. On this form you may indicate that you would like to either 1) Find out more about the PVP or 2) Enroll in the PVP. The next step will be for the Project to schedule a database tour with you and FoodChain, so that you can get a clear understanding of the kinds of information you will need to provide and what your participation will entail.
Once the Non-GMO Project has connected you with FoodChain, the verification is done through a confidential business agreement between you and FoodChain. With your permission, the Project will only be informed when 1) A product is enrolled and 2) A product has been verified.
Project staff will be available to answer your questions and offer support throughout the process, and will work with your marketing team regarding optional use of the “Non-GMO Project Verified” seal, and other public claims. For more information about that process, please see “Verification Claims.”
