Consumers

Dad & Daughter Having BreakfastThe Non-GMO Project was created for consumers. We believe that everyone has the right to an informed choice about what they eat. In Europe, all products containing more than 0.9% GMO are labeled by the government. In the U.S. and Canada, on the other hand, government has done nothing to inform consumers about which food and products contain GMOs, and it is estimated that GMOs are now present in more than 75% of the processed foods in the average grocery store.

Many people are concerned about the potential health risks of products made using the relatively new technology of genetic modification (to learn more, please see our About GMOs page). The Non-GMO Project respects your right to know what’s in the food you’re eating and the products you’re buying.

That’s why we have created North America’s first consensus-based Standard for GMO avoidance. Compliance to the Standard is assessed through our Product Verification Program. Although you may see other “non-GMO” claims on products, the “Non-GMO Project Verified” Seal is the only one backed by independent, third party verification, according to a consensus-based Standard.

By supporting participating companies and products that are enrolled in the Non-GMO Project, you become an essential part of the collaborative effort to ensure that there are non-GMO choices now and in the future.
