The Non-GMO Project offers North America’s only independent verification for products made according to best practices for GMO (genetically modified organisms) avoidance.

GMO’s have been linked to potential harmful effects to health and the environment, resulting in the escalation of allergens and reproductive and immune system issues, as well the thought that they may contain carcinogenic characteristics. “We care deeply about this issue and giving our customers the highest quality ingredients for their health and enjoyment. We believe people have the right to know what they are eating,” said Venus Wafers President Michael Thompson. “The re-launch of our Original Mariner Biscuit Company brand is the first step in gaining Non-GMO Project verification for the Venus Wafers’ family of brands. We are committed to being a completely Non-GMO commercial bakery.”

“At the Non-GMO Project, we believe that that everyone has a right to know what’s in their food, and should be able to avoid GMOs if they want to,” said Megan Westgate, executive director of the Non-GMO Project. “We offer North America’s only third party verification and labeling for non-GMO food and products, and we’re thrilled to award the ‘Non-GMO Project Verified’ status to Venus Wafers’ The Original Mariner Biscuit water crackers.”

Bellingham, WA – September 27, 2011: Scratch and Peck Feeds, the Northwest’s fastest growing 100% soy-free animal feed producer is pleased to announce its official participation in the Non-GMO Project. Scratch and Peck announced today that its entire lineup of animal feed products has been enrolled in the non-profit Non-GMO Project for its strict dedication to the avoidance of genetically modified ingredients. The company expects to be fully verified within 3-4 months after passing a stringent review process that focuses on testing, segregation, and traceability.

Since its beginning, Scratch and Peck Feeds has been dedicated to the use of only Non-GMO ingredients in their products. “With our Non-GMO Project participation our customers will have the added assurance that our animal feed products will be verified compliant with the Project’s rigorous standards. This will provide folks with the confidence that they are feeding their animals a wholesome, natural diet free of GMOs because, like we say, you are what your animals eat.”

Polls consistently show that a significant majority of North Americans would like to be able to tell if the food they’re purchasing contains genetically modified ingredients. In fact, in a recent CBS/New York Times poll, more than half of consumers asked said they would not buy food that has been genetically modified. The Non-GMO Project’s seal for verified products provides consumers an opportunity to make an informed choice when it comes to GMOs.

GMOs (“genetically modified organisms”) are organisms that have been created through the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur in nature and have not been proven safe. The effect of consuming these organisms over a long period of time has not been studied and the questionable business practices surrounding the industry are increasingly being scrutinized.

“Our decision to participate in the project came from our desire to practice what we preach. Our company exists because we and our customers are not convinced that genetically modified organisms are safe for them or their animals.”

About Scratch and Peck Feeds

Scratch and Peck Feeds is an up and coming animal feed producer based in Bellingham, WA that does not use soy in any of its products. We are committed to a triple bottom line requiring us to make every business decision with the environment and our community in mind. Since its inception, Scratch and Peck Feeds has purchased its grains from individual organic farmers as close to home as possible rather than on the commodity market. This helps support local economies and significantly reduces pollution attributed to shipping. Our animal feed line currently consists of poultry, rabbit, goat, sheep, and pig feed, as well as supplemental products for those and many other animals. We are passionate about providing only the most natural and highest quality feed available to our customers. Our products currently can be found in over 40 retail stores throughout the western states.

EatPastry has been dedicated to making the highest quality cookie dough without the use of animal ingredients since their humble beginnings, straight out of their basement.

EatPastry is charting new territory with their entirely vegan line of cookie dough made in a dedicated vegan facility by dedicated vegans. Being non-GMO verified offers people something sweet to indulge in without having to question what’s on the ingredient list, and guarantees a non-GMO product without worry. All of EatPastry’s ingredients are 100% natural, and come from the highest quality suppliers.

The Non-GMO Project offers North America’s only third party verification for products produced according to rigorous best practices for GMO (genetically modified organism) avoidance. GMOs are created in a laboratory through experimental technology that merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature. The Non-GMO Project was created in response to consumer concerns about the health risks of genetically modified organisms in the food supply.

“We are very proud to stand behind the Non-GMO Project in verifying our cookie dough, knowing that everything that we put into our products supports the good of our society and our earth,” said Jessie Williams, Co-owner and CEO of EatPastry. “It is our duty to supply customers with the best products and ingredients on the market, because that is what we expect when we’re shopping as well.”

EatPastry plans to revamp it’s current packaging to display the Non-GMO Project Verified Mark, which are now listed on the Non-GMO Projects website, www.nongmoproject.org.

BELLINGHAM, WA (October 4, 2011)—This October, nearly 1,000 natural food stores across the U.S. and Canada are taking part in Non‐GMO Month, celebrating the public’s right to choose food and products that do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Organized by the non‐profit Non‐GMO Project, Non-GMO Month provides a platform for citizens and organizations to stand up for the right to know what’s in their food, and to choose non-GMO. Dozens of Non-GMO Month events are scheduled throughout October, including a historic Rigth2Know March from NYC to DC, and a mom’s panel focusing on protecting children from GMOs.

GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses and other animals and plants. These experimental combinations of genes cross the natural species barrier and have not been proven safe. Studies increasingly show a connection between GMOs and an array of health risks and environmental concerns. While GMOs are labeled or banned in most developed countries, in the U.S. and Canada they are unlabeled and are found in nearly 80% of processed food.

With U.S. consumer confidence shaken by ongoing food safety failures, distrust of GMOs is growing. As a result, consumers are increasingly seeking non‐GMO choices, and Nielsen reported last February that “GMO‐free” is currently one of the fastest growing store brand label claims. In the natural sector, SPINS reports that “Non-GMO Project Verified” is growing faster than any other product claim they track, with at least $250mm in marketplace sales.

Speaker, author and children’s health advocate Robyn O’Brien says, “As a mother of children with food allergies, it concerns me that there are currently no definitive tests that can be relied upon to predict whether the novel proteins in genetically engineered foods might trigger an allergic reaction. We have the right to know what we’re feeding our families, and the Non-GMO Project Verified label makes it possible to keep GMO foods out of our kids’ lunch boxes.”

Throughout October, shoppers will be able to find Non-GMO Project Verified choices featured at nearly 1,000 Non-GMO Month registered retail stores. On the Non-GMO Month website, people can search the events calendar, find retailers, and enter a Non-GMO Month Daily Giveaway contest.

September 8, 2011 ― New York, NY ― Purely Elizabeth (www.purelyelizabeth.com) today announced that several of its products, including their Cookie Mixes and Ancient Grain Granola Cereals, have received “Non-GMO Project Verified” status from the Non-GMO Project, a non- profit multi-stakeholder collaboration committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products, educating consumers and providing verified non-GMO choices.

“I started Purely Elizabeth because I wanted to offer consumers healthier food alternatives, and providing foods that are non-GMO goes hand in hand with that,” said Elizabeth Stein, founder and CEO of Purely Elizabeth. “This certification shows our commitment to providing customers with the highest quality products that are both good for them and the planet.”

GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) are organisms that have been created through the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology. This relatively new science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

“We believe that that everyone has a right to know what’s in their food, and should be able to avoid GMOs if they want to,” said Megan Westgate, Executive Director of the Non-GMO Project. “We offer North America’s only third party verification and labeling for non-GMO food and products, and we’re thrilled to award the ‘Non-GMO Project Verified’ status to Purely Elizabeth’s cookie mixes and ancient grain granola cereals.”

All of Purely Elizabeth’s products are certified vegan and certified gluten-free and use all-natural and organic nutritious ingredients. Products are available at independent grocery stores and major retailers around the country.
New site at www.nongmomonth.org empowers citizens, organizations and businesses to celebrate non-GMO.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New site empowers citizens, organizations and businesses to celebrate non-GMO

BELLINGHAM, WA—As the second annual Non-GMO Month approaches this October, North Americans are becoming savvier than ever to the failures and risks of GMOs (genetically modified organisms). While anti-GMO sentiment picks up speed throughout the blogosphere and social media networks, in grocery stores shoppers are showing a clear preference for non-GMO food. Sales of Non-GMO Project Verified products have skyrocketed to a 24% annual growth rate, faster than gluten-free, fair trade, and every other claim in the natural channel. A new website, www.nongmomonth.org, helps coordinate this burgeoning movement by encouraging the public to celebrate their right to choose non-GMO. The site features an open interface that allows all users to create and participate in non-GMO events during the month of October.

Founded by the Non-GMO Project in 2010, Non-GMO Month offers a focused platform for groups and individuals working to protect a non-GMO food supply and defend consumer choice. Last year nearly 600 natural foods retailers participated in Non-GMO Month by hosting events, distributing educational materials, and featuring Non-GMO Project Verified products on their shelves. This year, the celebration is expanding beyond store walls with a Right2Know March from New York City to Washington, D.C., and grassroots gatherings across the country.

“Americans want out of the GMO experiment,” said Non-GMO Project Executive Director Megan Westgate. “People in Europe and other developed nations don’t eat GMOs or feed them to their families, and we shouldn’t have to either. Non-GMO Month is about celebrating our right to safe, healthy, non-GMO food, and nongmomonth.org is a great tool for helping us come together.”

In addition to an events calendar, the new website includes a listing of retailers participating in Non-GMO Month and a Daily Giveaway calendar where visitors can win prizes throughout October.
