Rumiano Cheese Company Achieves Non-GMO Project Verification

CRESCENT CITY, CA (January 21, 2011) – Rumiano Cheese Company proudly announced today that its entire organic cheese line, organic butter, and organic WPC-80% are the first in the world to achieve Non-GMO Project Verification. Rumiano Cheese Company has been producing all natural, grass–fed, rBST-free, kosher, real California cheese for over 90 years and is California’s oldest family owned cheese company.

Rumiano Cheese Company is the first and only cheese company in the world to have achieved this distinct verification for its organic products. “Rumiano Cheese Company is honored to be a pioneer in the Non-GMO Project for its dairy products. The Non-GMO Project is a very thorough verification process and will be a great addition to our entire organic dairy line,” said Joby Rumiano, Fourth Generation owner of Rumiano Cheese Company.

The Non-GMO Project’s Product Verification Program is the nation’s first and only system designed to test whether a product has met defined standards for the presence of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). GMOs are created in a laboratory through splicing various DNA from different species of organisms to create something that otherwise would not occur naturally. The Non-GMO Project is a third-party verification program that was created in response to consumer health concerns over Genetically Modified Organisms entering their food supply.

“We’re thrilled to have Non-GMO Project Verified cheese,” said Non-GMO Project Executive Director Megan Westgate. “Consumers everywhere are looking for choices that support their commitment to non-GMO, and it’s great to have a whole new product line in the mix.”
Rumiano Cheese Company organic products will now display the Non-GMO Project Verified Mark on its packaging and is now listed on the Non-GMO Project’s website, www.nongmoproject.org, on the Search Participating Products page, as well as on the Non-GMO Project’s printable PDF and iPhone application shopping guides for consumers. Rumiano Cheese Company conventional cheese products are also enrolled in the Non-GMO Project and are awaiting verification.

About Rumiano Cheese Company
The Rumiano Cheese Company is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, and credits its success to a talented workforce and ideal environmental conditions that foster great milk. Richard, Fred, and John Rumiano, three Italian immigrants who arrived in the United States at the turn of the century founded the California-based company in 1921. Rumiano’s cheese production takes place in Crescent City, which is located roughly 10 miles from the Oregon border in northern California. The company receives its milk supply daily from independent, third and fourth generation dairy farmers from nearby Humboldt and Del Norte counties. The area’s mild climate and abundant rainfall stimulates feed growth and allows for year-round grazing. All of the milk used by Rumiano Cheese is free of artificial hormones such as rBST. All organic products are Kosher, Non-GMO, American Humane, Real California, and USDA Organic certified “We have some of the finest milk in the nation here,” Baird Rumiano said. Besides producing its own brand of products, the Rumiano Company makes cheese for other private labels. “We also do a lot of co-packing,’ John Rumiano said. Nearly 300 miles southeast of Crescent City is the company’s cut and wrap, slicing, and distribution center in Willows, CA. Sustainability has been a part of the company since day one and continues to be a big part of our company. Rumiano Cheese Company most recently won 3 Gold Medals and 1 Bronze Medal in the 2010 American Cheese Society Competition in Seattle, Washington. “It all comes down to good people, good ingredients and good products,” Baird Rumiano said.
