Pure Seed is proud to announce that many of its grass seed products are Non-GMO Project Verified, and eventually the entire suite of forages will be Verified. In order to use the nationally recognized Non-GMO Project Verified seal, all ingredients must meet best practices for GMO avoidance based on their rigorous Standard.
GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms”, are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses, or other animals and plants—crossing beyond the natural species barrier—and there is a global debate regarding the health and environmental impacts of these organisms.
Increasingly, end-users of grass and forage seed products are asking if the seeds they are using are non-GMO. “Pure Seed has a proud history of non-GMO breeding successes,” says President of Pure Seed Crystal Rose-Fricker. “Having North America’s only independent third-party non-GMO verification attest to the non-GMO status of Pure Seed products is an important step in assuring the end-user that the products they purchase provide GMO transparency.”
Megan Westgate, Executive Director of the Non-GMO Project, talks about the significance of the non–GMO movement globally: “Currently more than 60 countries around the world have significant restrictions or outright bans on the sale or production of GMOs. In the absence of mandatory labeling in the U.S. and Canada, the Non-GMO Project was created to give consumers, manufacturers and supply markets the informed choice they deserve.” Pure Seed ships millions of pounds of seeds internationally every year, and international users are becoming confused as to whether or not U.S. forage seeds are GMO.
Non-GMO Project Verified Pure Seed forages include Cowgirl Forage Tall Fescue, Tetragain Perennial Ryegrass, Spring Green Festulolium, Chilly Verde Forage Bermudagrass, Big Blue Forage Bluegrass and Giant Redtop Bentgrass, with many other forage and turfgrass varieties pending verification. Look for the official Non-GMO Project Verified seal at your local seed supplier this spring.
