FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ste. Agathe, Manitoba, Canada (August 20, 2010) – Hemp Oil Canada Inc. (HOCI), Canada’s leader in procurement, processing, marketing and distribution of hemp food products and ingredients, has recently joined the Non-GMO Project, which will enable verification of bulk wholesale and private label brands.

HOCI will soon offer customers the option to feature the Non-GMO Project Seal on their packaging. The seal identifies these products as Non-GMO Project verified, ensuring that they were produced according to consensus-based best practices for GMO avoidance, including testing of risk ingredients. This seal enables customers to make an informed decision on whether or not to consume products that contain genetically-modified organisms.

The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit collaboration comprised of manufacturers, retailers, processors, distributors, farmers, seed companies and consumers who are concerned with the use of GMOs in food products. Prior to the Non-GMO Project, there was no established system to evaluate “non-GMO” claims. Enrollment in the Project provides third party verification, and includes standards that ensure comprehensive traceability, segregation and testing requirements.

“From the beginning, we have always believed in providing healthy food options that were sustainably produced. Joining the Non-GMO Project simply affirms this belief,” says Shaun Crew, President of Hemp Oil Canada. Hemp foods are a perfect example of a plant-based product that boasts numerous health benefits being produced in a sustainable way. Hemp is rich in naturally-occurring essential nutrients, is a good source of high quality and easily digestible protein, free from known allergens, and contains an optimum balance of polyunsaturated fats. In terms of production, hemp is naturally resistant to most pests and can be relatively weed competitive  precluding the use of pesticides and herbicides. Adding “non-GMO” to the growing benefits of hemp food products and ingredients further substantiates the goodness of hemp.
