Angelic Bakehouse Acheives Non-GMO Project Verification

Logo_revised 12-4-13Angelic Bakehouse, a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) certified bakery specializing in sprouted grain products, has received Non-GMO Project Verified status for its best-selling product, Sprouted Seven-Grain bread. The Non-GMO Project is North America’s only third party source for verification and labeling of non-GMO food and products.

The company is working towards Non-GMO Project Verification for the remainder of its product line –including wraps, flatbreads and buns – in 2016. The bread’s distinctive “Smart & Good Looking” packaging will begin carrying the Non-GMO Project Verified seal later this month.

“Angelic Bakehouse is all about creating pure bread perfection—using the purest non-GMO ingredients and crafting them into something better through our unique sprouted grain mash process,” says Angelic Bakehouse CEO and President Jenny Marino. ”We’ve always insisted on using non-GMO ingredients, but the verification process is another way for us to be transparent.”

According to the Center for Food Safety, over 90% of U.S. consumers believe food with genetically engineered or modified ingredients should be labeled—although the U.S. federal government doesn’t require it or conduct verifications. The Non-GMO Project has filled this gap and become widely recognized across the natural and organic foods industry. The organization has also gained recognition among consumers through national outreach efforts, such as Non-GMO Month every October.

The Non-GMO Project’s Product Verification Program (PVP) designates a product’s compliance with the Non-GMO Project standards based on a variety of factors, including traceability, segregation and testing of high-risk ingredients. According to the organization, the verification process typically takes on average 4-6 months. However, Angelic’s seven-grain bread was verified in less than 60 days – a testament to the quality of the company’s ingredients.
